Resilience insights related to the global food crisis

BBC World News: Centre researcher Robert Blasiak and Julia Sigwart, research leader at Senckenberg Research Institute, explains the role marine genetic diversity plays in developing reliable tests for COVID-19.

A collection of reflections, publications and news that are relevant to the ongoing crisis

The current global food crisis is likely to get worse and to have severe consequences far beyond the food sector.

The war in Ukraine has sparked off a course of events linked to food and energy security which is difficult to predict. This comes on top of climate-related droughts and heatwaves affecting harvests globally.

What we know from our research is that food insecurity can cause new conflicts and social unrest. Furthermore, there is an imminent risk that policymakers will try to cope with the growing food insecurity by lowering environmental ambitions.

With climate change and biodiversity loss already now threatening food production, this is not a solution.

We also know that our global food systems are extremely vulnerable. Most of our food is based on a small amount of crops which are produced in just a few countries.

At Stockholm Resilience Centre we have substantial scientific expertise on sustainable food systems. We know what is needed in the long run and we have suggestions for how to get there.
