Marine gene patents reveal biotech's blue economy gaps

Marine genetic resources hold promise for sustainable development, but who patents them, and for what?

A new study analyzed 1,676 marine gene patents to map who is patenting what. Private companies focus on industrial and agricultural applications, while universities and research institutes disproportionately develop foundational tools that enable downstream innovation. We identified 221 patents where marine enzymes directly drive the invention, with applications ranging from bioenergy and green chemistry to diagnostics and therapeutics. Some innovations clearly advance sustainability goals, others deliver only incremental gains.

"Marine biotechnology is a tool, not an outcome," the authors note. Whether it contributes to a sustainable blue economy depends on how it is used, and on the transparency needed to trace genetic resources from ocean data to market products. The new BBNJ Agreement aims to mandate that traceability, but ongoing implementation efforts will be the key to making it work.
