The JUSTRA matrix uses key questions to examine how justice has shaped food systems in the past, how it affects them now, and how it should guide future decisions. By using this tool food system players can work toward a fairer food system.
Creating a fair and sustainable food system is essential for achieving environmental, economic, and social well-being. However, discussions about food system change often overlook justice and fairness, even though these issues are deeply connected. To bridge this gap, the authors introduce the JUST TRAnsformation (JUSTRA) matrix—a tool designed to help people think critically about justice while working toward food system change.
The JUSTRA matrix uses key questions to examine how justice has shaped food systems in the past, how it affects them now, and how it should guide future decisions. By using this tool thoughtfully, policymakers, businesses, farmers, activists, and other food system players can plan, implement, and track progress toward a fairer food system. It also helps uncover and address power imbalances that often create barriers to meaningful change.
While further testing is needed to refine the matrix, it has the potential to be a valuable resource for bringing different stakeholders together. It provides a structured way to navigate the complex and often unpredictable challenges of making food systems more just and sustainable.
