Text
This seminar will present a set of findings on everyday forms of resilience that locate resilience to global change within the lived experiences and narratives of people themselves. It discusses how resilience is understood and constructed at the interface of multiple, interlocking stressors.
Building on Katrina Brown’s recent book, Resilience, Development and Global Change, its starting point is to advance social dynamics, power and politics, voice and agency within our understanding of resilience in social ecological systems. It showcases recent work using participatory drama and creative arts to explore hidden dimensions and diverse perspectives on resilience, and suggest transformative solutions to address underlying vulnerabilities.
About Katrina Brown
Katrina Brown is Professor of Social Sciences at the University of Exeter in UK. Her research explores how major challenges of sustainability – poverty, inequality and equity, uncertainty and environmental change - play out and are inter-linked. This applies concepts including vulnerability, resilience and adaptation.
Professor Brown chairs the Science Committee of the ARC Centre of Excellence in Coral Reef Studies at James Cook University in Australia, co-Chairs the International Advisory Committee of the Ecosystem Services and Poverty Alleviation programme, and was recently appointed to the Board of the Stockholm Resilience Centre. She has and is collaborating with a number of SRC colleagues, including Tim Daw, Beatrice Crona and others on the SPACES project.
