Giorgio Parlato explores the financial system's impacts on nature and its potential to drive the sustainability transition.

Parlato’s research aims to better understand the financial system’s contribution to environmental degradation, as well as the potential and the mechanisms through which financial institutions can support the sustainability transition. One of his current focus areas is the development and testing of novel tools to better measure environmental impact, so as to improve investment decision-making. His research will build on previous work related to the Earth System Impact (ESI) metric, which enables companies and financial institutions to measure their global environmental impact across three planetary boundaries, while also considering the critical interactions between them. Parlato aims for his research to have practical implications for industry players, supporting decision-making by providing state-of-the-art tools that account for a more nuanced understanding of the Earth System. Thus, as part of his PhD, Parlato is collaborating with, and learning from stakeholders in the finance and corporate spheres.

After completing a Bachelor's degree in Economics and Finance at LUISS University, Parlato obtained an MBA with a focus on entrepreneurship and sustainability at Syracuse University. His passion for sustainable food systems led him to co-found a plant-based food company. He later joined the Global Economic Dynamics and the Biosphere (GEDB) programme as a research assistant, contributing to the Biosphere Finance projects within GEDB.

Parlato is part of the Sustainable Finance Lab SWEDEN, a transdisciplinary research centre dedicated to transforming financial markets and advancing sustainable development across society.
