Carlotta Schäfer is an MSc student with a passion for exploring the intersection of gender, conservation, and socio-ecological resilience, with a particular focus on how gender dynamics influence sustainability practices in protected areas.

Schäfer’s research investigates the role of gender in shaping conservation practices for more inclusive and equitable socio-ecological systems. Her master thesis with the title “Shifting Landscapes: Changing Gender Identities in South Africa’s Kruger National Park,” explores the influence of green militarization on both conservation efforts and gender dynamics.

Prior to joining the SRC, Schäfer completed a BSc in Sustainable Business Development at Jönköping University in Sweden. Her bachelor thesis investigated the challenges that the indigenous Sami reindeer industry in northern Sweden is facing. Schäfer conducted a grounded theory case study of the Sami reindeer industry in Sweden, examining the interplay of social, economic, and environmental challenges that the industry is facing. During her Erasmus+ semester at the University of Amsterdam she focused her studies on climate security and leadership in sustainability.
