In particular, he will address questions about what lies beyond the current global polycrisis and the implications for rapidly industrialising developing economies. Can we anticipate a 'sixth wave' of industrial growth? What will the next long-term development cycle look like?

He will draw on his work on decoupling and global material flows for UNEP's International Resource Panel as well as his local work in Stellenbosch, South Africa, where he has translated his thinking into practice in the building of South Africa's first socially integrated ecologically designed neighbourhood.

About Mark Swilling
Professor Swilling is at Stellenbosch University in South Africa where he is Programme Coordinator of the Sustainable Development Programme in the School of Public Leadership. He is also Academic Director of the Sustainability Institute and Project Leader of the Centre for the Transdisciplinary Study of Sustainability and Complexity (TsamaHub).

He is a member of UNEP's International Resource Panel and Coordinator of this panel's Cities Working Group. He has published extensively on development, cities, sustainability, material flows and governance.
