Based on Young's recent article in PNAS (request publication) on evaluating the current state of knowledge regarding the effectiveness of international environmental regimes, this presentation explores opportunities for enhancing our understanding of the effectiveness of international regimes more generally.

Young will direct attention to a series of questions about causal mechanisms associated with effectiveness proposed by those concerned with the roles of power, interests, and ideas. He will then widen the scope to examine a series of broader questions relating to institutional  interplay, shifts in the socioecological and socioeconomic settings in which regimes operate,  and matters of scale.
