Prof. Dunlap on Global Warming

2001-04-18 - 2001-04-18

Prof. Riley E. Dunlap will on April 18, 2001, hold the seminar "The American Right-Wing and Global Warming: How Conservative Foundations, Think-Tanks, Politicians and Skeptic Scientists are Subverting the Kyoto Protocol".

The American Right-Wing has been very active in the policy arena since the 1970s, and has recently turned its attention to global warming.

It has generated a 'counter-movement' to oppose efforts of the Environmental Movement, environmental scientists and environmental policy-makers to establish the seriousness of global warming and to develop policies to ameliorate it.

An overview of the Right-Wing's efforts to delegitimate global warming, and thereby subvert U.S. ratification of the Kyoto Protocol, will be presented. The activities of Conservative foundations, think-tanks and politicians and their support for the "skeptic scientists" who down-play the seriousness of global warming will be described.

Prof. Riley E. Dunlap is a Boeing Distinguished Professor of Environmental Sociology at Washington State University.
