Jean Ometto is Head of the Centre for Earth System Science at Brazil’s National Space Research Institute (INPE). His expertise is in the ecological impacts of climate change, with a particular focus on the biogeochemical cycling of carbon and nutrients, the interactions of the biosphere and atmosphere, and forest dynamics.

This symposium showcased progress in the transdisciplinary science of the global ‘safe operating space for humanity’. Since the pioneering publication in 2009 of the planetary boundaries concept for global sustainability, the concept has been debated, developed, and put into real-world practice in business and policy.

The speakers and panelists represented diverse perspectives in science, policy, business and wider society, and discussed the challenges and opportunities when translating scientific concepts to practical action for sustainability.
