Stockholm Resilience Centre joins new marine network at Stockholm University

Stockholm University has launched a new network for marine research. The network aims to strengthen collaboration, knowledge exchange and the visibility of marine research across the university.
At a kick-off meeting at the end of the spring semester 2025, Stockholm University launched the Marine Research Network. The aim with the network is to strengthen collaboration, knowledge exchange and visibility of marine research across Stockholm University. This joint initiative between the Bolin Centre for Climate Research, Stockholm Resilience Centre and the Baltic Sea Centre aims to connect researchers studying ocean-related topics from diverse scientific perspectives, including the natural sciences, social sciences, law and humanities at Stockholm University.
Collaboration keyword within the network
At the kick-off meeting, researchers from the Bolin Centre for Climate Research, Stockholm Resilience Centre and the Baltic Sea Centre gave short presentations on current research and research infrastructure but also discussed knowledge exchange. "Collaboration” was a frequently used word in the discussion and when the participants were asked to summarize their expectations for the new network.
“I truly believe that this network is a brilliant initiative that will not only strengthen our already excellent marine research but also help showcase the breadth and depth of our expertise — as it rightly deserves,” says Martin Jakobsson, Deputy Vice President at Stockholm University.
”The network welcomes contributions from researchers to help develop and shape this initiative. We aim to explore new ideas and drive marine knowledge forward,” says Thorsten Blenckner, associate professor at Stockholm Resilience Centre.
Ilona Riipinen, director of the Bolin Centre for Climate Research adds:
“There is significant scientific potential in combining these expert fields. Through this new network we can strengthen the connections and foster transdisciplinary collaboration among researchers at Stockholm University through a range of activities, such as seminars and thematic workshops."
The network welcomes contributions from researchers to help develop and shape this initiative. We aim to explore new ideas and drive marine knowledge forward.

This autumn, members can look forward to thematic workshops, research dialogues and policy events designed to foster interdisciplinary cooperation and impactful outreach. All colleagues are encouraged to contribute ideas and get involved in upcoming activities to help shape the network’s future.
