Where and when to find us during the UN Ocean Conference in Lisbon, Portugal 27 June - 1 July

Story highlights

  • Stockholm Resilience Centre is engaged in several events during the UN Ocean Conference in Lisbon, Portugal
  • Our portfolio of activities includes official side events, a report launch and a youth forum
  • The official venue for the conference is Altice Arena, but many events are taking place throughout the city

We have entered the Anthropocene, and perhaps nowhere is this more evident than in the ocean. Not only are the impacts of climate change, overexploitation and ecosystem degradation growing in severity, but there is a simultaneous growth in aspirations for the ocean as an engine of just, equitable and sustainable development (a “blue economy”).

The speed, scale and scope of ocean uses is expanding at a rapid pace that has to date failed to align with these aspirations.

The UN Ocean Conference, UNOC, aims to mobilize action by pushing for much needed science-based innovative solutions.

The Stockholm Resilience Centre is involved in several events during the conference. Below is a summary of the most important ones. All timeslots are indicated in Lisbon time (WEST).

25-26 June at Carcavelos Beach, Avenida Marginal Sector Nascente 2:

UN Ocean Conference Youth and Innovation Forum

Centre researcher Robert Blasiak functions as a mentor at the UN Ocean Conference Youth and Innovation Forum, which aims to be a platform for ocean action and implementing youth-led solutions at scale to address SDG 14 targets.

On June 26, the forum concludes with an evening of food and drinks to celebrate the end of the Youth and Innovation Forum and the beginning of the UN Ocean Conference.
