Beatrice Crona appointed professor in sustainability science

Deputy science director selected for newly established professorship in sustainability science with focus on sustainable food systems

Story highlights

  • The position is placed at the Department of Environmental Science at Stockholm University
  • Her work will focus on exploring and further developing the knowledge required to work towards a sustainable food system, particularly on aquatic food
  • Crona joins centre director Line Gordon who earlier in 2021 also was appointed to similar position

The Stockholm Resilience Centre continues to strengthen its research on food system sustainability and resilience.

Gullspång Invest and its subsidiary Gullspång Re:food have together with the IKEA Foundation funded the establishment of a professorship in Sustainability Science, with a focus on Sustainable Food Systems. Centre deputy science director Beatrice Crona has been appointed to this position.

She joins centre director Line Gordon who earlier in 2021 was appointed on a similar position, the Curt Bergfors Professorship.

Gustaf Brandberg, General Partner at Gullspång Re:food, says: "Stockholm Resilience Centre’s has successfully identified previously overlooked connections, levers, and actors across the food system. We hope this support will help strengthen the much-needed synergies across the academic and private sectors while accelerating the shift toward a sustainable future."

Proud and delighted

The position is placed at the Department of Environmental Science at Stockholm University, but Crona will be on leave from the department to work at the Stockholm Resilience Centre as well as the Royal Swedish Academy where she heads the Global Economic Dynamics and the Biosphere programme.

Crona has extensive experience within oceans and fisheries governance, and is co-chair of the Blue Food Assessment, an international joint initiative bringing together over 100 scientists from more than 25 institutions.

I am both proud and delighted about this opportunity. It will strengthen the centre’s already exciting work on developing healthy, sustainable and equitable food systems.

Beatrice Crona

Her work will focus on exploring and further developing the knowledge required to work towards a sustainable food system, particularly on aquatic food.

“When we talk about transforming our food systems we tend to focus on land-based aspects of them. But we need to consider everything connected to our lakes, rivers and oceans too. Aquatic foods offer great untapped potential for providing more sustainable diets,” she says.

Exceptional expertise

Centre science director Henrik Österblom says: “This flexible, long term funding is instrumental for our ability to continue create innovative science. The appointment is thus not only a boost to our research work, but also a wonderful credit to Beatrice’s work over the past decade. Her engagement and expertise is exceptional.”

The professorship is part of a wider funding effort into sustainable food systems research, which started with the Curt Bergfors professorship, and is now expanded through funding from the Ikea Foundation and Gullspång Invest.

The funding will help develop scientific insights that can contribute to the transformation into more sustainable, regenerative and just food systems.

Specifically, the Stockholm Resilience Centre will establish a new research programme to find leverage points and identify key actions and actors in the transformation of food systems.
