Centre researcher internationally renowned for her research on the dynamics of social-ecological systems

Centre researcher Maja Schlüter has been officially appointed as professor in sustainability science at Stockholm university. The promotion is an acknowledgement of Schlüter’s work within sustainability science.

She has several highly cited publications in high-level journals and her work on modelling and studying social-ecological systems as intertwined, complex adaptive systems is considered cutting edge by colleagues in the field.

“This professorship will open up new possibilities for conducting and leading new research, teaching and leading collaborative teams that I look forward to engage in,” Schlüter says.

The position will be formally affiliated with the Department of Physcial Geography at Stockholm Univeristy.

Continuing innovative research

Over the last ten years she has held various leadership positions for research groups. These include the centre-based SES-LINK group which was funded by a European Research Council (ERC) starting grant.

Today the SES-LINK group continues with funding from an ERC consolidator grant as well as other grants from the EU and Swedish agencies to several members of the group. SES-LINK today consists of 14 members with backgrounds ranging from among others mathematics, physics and computer science to ecology, political science, development research, political ecology, cognitive science and philosophy.

“The diversity of the group has been a great opportunity for innovative research combining empirical studies with dynamic modelling and operating at the interfaces between social and natural sciences,” she says.

A global leader

Centre science director Henrik Österblom is both proud and pleased about the promotion: “Professor Schlüter is a global leader on social-ecological systems research. I am very excited about this promotion, and the long-term opportunities it generates for us to further advance the important work on complexity perspectives and methods.”
