Honorary doctor at Stockholm University
Frances Westley, former Chair of the centre board, named 2019 honorary doctor for her contribution to the university’s research and education
Westley, a professor of social Innovation at the University of Waterloo, Canada, is among seven researchers to receive the title as Honorady doctorate at Stockholm University for their contribution to the university’s research and education.
Her work on the transformation to sustainable development and the importance of institutional entrepreneurs in resilience and socio-economic systems has gained international attention. She has collaborated for decades with natural scientists in order to improve the administration of ecosystems, natural resources and biological diversity.
Wesley was a board member of the Stockholm Resilience Centre between 2007 and 2018. She was the Chair of the board between 2012 and 2018. She has played a central role in the centre’s growth and inspired researchers and co-workers to constructively engage across disciplinary boundaries with today’s big issues. Today, she is a member of the centre’s new International Science Advisory Council.
In 2019, Westley was also among the 40 awardees for social innovation by the Schwab Foundation for Social Entrepreneurship. Specifically, Westley was given the award as Social Innovation Thought Leader. “The 2019 Schwab Foundation awardees represent a new ecosystem of leaders who are driving change and shifting organizations and systems towards a more just, inclusive, sustainable future,” said François Bonnici, Head of the Schwab Foundation for Social Entrepreneurship.
