Places that connect: Action-oriented research in UNESCO sites

UNESCO World Heritage sites and Biosphere Reserves prioritise sustainable governance to preserve the uniqueness of place for future generations, which makes them interesting case studies for action-oriented research. But how can researchers effectively engage with local communities in such protected areas to strengthen and support sustainable governance?

This study identifies three key approaches: building on existing place-based identities and local connections to mobilise research participation, leveraging UNESCO's ideals to inspire collaboration, and critically reflecting on researchers' own positioning within these spaces.

By drawing on own experiences of working in UNESCO World Heritage sites and Biosphere Reserves, the authors also demonstrate that UNESCO designations can both strengthen and potentially challenge people's relationships with place. When designations align with local values, they can nurture place-based identity and sense of belonging and motivate communities to participate in action-oriented research. However, rigid protection requirements might not correspond with local place meanings and attachments and can sometimes limit opportunities for innovation and adaptation.

This study emphasises the importance of researchers understanding these complex dynamics and reflecting on their own role when working in these special places. By navigating these relationships thoughtfully, researchers can support sustainable governance while respecting local contexts and connections.
