Spreading Environmental Economics Worldwide

Summary

Karl-Göran Mäler (KGM) cared passionately about the spread of environmental economics, both into new areas of enquiry and geographically to all parts of the world. (See Xepapadeas and de Zeeuw, 2020 for one of several obituaries as well as Beijer Institute of Ecological Economics (2020), EfD (2020), Stockholm Resilience Centre (2020)). He believed that economics and ecology should be integrated to adress some of the most pressing societal problems. Such integration should be built, he insisted, on the best of what each of the two sciences have to offer. Though KGM was fundamentally a theorist, he was very interested in applications and real-life problems. His interests ranged from economic measures of welfare to valuation, resource management and game theory.
