Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals within the Planetary Boundaries
Summary
This report documents that if we simply continue with business as usual, the world will not succeed in achieving the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) within the nine planetary boundaries (PBs) by 2030. These are results from running an integrated system model based on historical data from 1980 – 2015. One out of 4 scenario demonstrates that the world’s nations can work in a truly transformational way. This implies executing ve bold and transformative change which succeed in meeting nearly all SDGs for the world’s population within Earth’s safe operating space. This does require substantial political will. But the present cost will be moderate, and the future pro ts huge. Four scenario runs, titled “Same”, ”Faster”, ”Try”, “Harder”, ”Smarter” are summarized in the gure below. The report was initiated by the Stockholm Resilience Centre at Stockholm University and BI Norwegian Business School with support from the Global Challenges Foundation. The project team consisted of experts from Scandinavia, UK, Africa, China and India.
