Introducing the Society for Social-Ecological Systems: Uniting researchers for a just and sustainable future.

A new chapter in global sustainability research has begun. Scientists and practitioners from around the world have come together to launch the Society for Social-Ecological Systems (SocSES) — the first international society dedicated to the science and practice of social-ecological systems.

The Society’s mission is clear: to foster collaboration, learning, and action across disciplines, cultures, and regions in order to tackle some of the world’s most pressing sustainability challenges.

Social-ecological systems research explores the deep and often complex connections between human societies and the natural environments they depend on. From climate resilience in coastal communities to sustainable food systems and biodiversity conservation, this field plays a crucial role in shaping pathways toward a more just and sustainable future.

The launch of SocSES marks a major milestone in building a global, supportive, and inclusive community of researchers and practitioners. The Society is not only about advancing science, it’s about creating real-world solutions and empowering collaboration across continents.

Building bridges across borders

SocSES is designed to be a welcoming home for both experienced researchers and early-career professionals. The society puts particular emphasis on amplifying diverse perspectives — especially those from the Global South — and on nurturing new ways of understanding and working with social-ecological systems.

In addition to traditional research, SocSES aims to encourage innovative knowledge-sharing spaces, environmentally responsible networking practices, and an open culture of learning. Membership is open to individuals and institutions who want to contribute to building a fairer, more resilient world.

A collective effort for change

The formation of SocSES is the result of years of collaboration between leading sustainability networks, including the Resilience Alliance (RA), the Program on Ecosystem Change and Society (PECS), the Global Resilience Partnership, the Transformations Community, and several Future Earth Global Research Networks.

The official launch of the Society will take place online, bringing together voices from across the globe — from senior scientists to emerging leaders in the field — to reflect on the future of social-ecological systems research. The launch also marks the start of an exciting co-development phase, where members will shape the Society’s future together.

By creating this global community, SocSES offers a strong and collective voice for those working to understand and transform the relationship between people and planet.

Join the global conversation

The Stockholm Resilience Centre warmly invites researchers, practitioners, and changemakers everywhere to join the Society for Social-Ecological Systems and become part of a growing global effort to build knowledge, foster resilience, and drive meaningful action toward sustainability.
