Marta Sylla’s research focuses on understanding ecosystem contribution to human well-being and communicating nature’s values to support decision making at local to global scale.

Marta Sylla is a postdoctoral researcher advancing Gross Ecosystem Product concept using ecosystem services modelling and valuation approaches and ecosystem accounting framework. Her role is part of a collaborative program between the Stockholm Resilience Centre at Stockholm University and the Natural Capital (NatCap) Project at Stanford University, supported by funding from the Marianne and Marcus Wallenberg Foundation.

Before joining the NatCap project at Stockholm Resilience Centre as a postdoctoral researcher, she was a visiting postdoc at the NatCap TEEMs Center at the University of Minnesota, USA, where she focused on global valuation and modelling of agriculture-related ecosystem services.  She has contributed to European Horizon projects and successfully secured her own grant for early-career researchers, focusing on ecosystem accounting. Additionally, she has been a visiting researcher at the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission, where she worked on the same topic.

Sylla completed her PhD at Wroclaw University of Environmental and Life Siences in Poland, where she also gained vast teaching experience. She has been involved in food-related research through the FoodCityBoost project and contributed to the development of a community-supported agriculture initative.

Awards and achievements

  • 2023 Scholarship for outstanding young scientists – Polish Ministry
    of Education and Science. The scholarship is awarded to young scientists representing various disciplines who stand out for their scientific activity and achievements
