Frida Bengtsson's research focuses on ocean governance with a particular focus on fisheries
Bengtsson’s research focuses on understanding drivers and actors and the role of corporate stewardship and government accountability in the management of the global ocean.
The starting point of her studies is to untangle ownership, relations and the governance systems that facilitates transhipments. Transhipments is when catches are transferred between fishing vessels and refrigerated cargo vessel. This practice is often described as opaque and underpinning illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing as well as human rights abuses at sea.
The world of seafood is often dominated by the stories and perspectives of men despite women making up a substantial number of the workforce within seafood. The research will also explore what a feminist lens can offer for the understanding of power, relations and discourse in the seafood business.
Bengtsson holds a Bachelor’s degree in social sciences with a major in Geography and a Master’s degree in Development Studies. Before joining the SRC she worked in the NGO sector, and has been involved in several major corporate sustainability commitments covering entire supply chains of seafood and has led several ship tours to the Arctic and the Antarctic.
In her previous role Bengtsson attended multiple meetings of the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) as well as UN negotiations on a new high seas’ biodiversity treaty.
