Claes grew up in the southern Stockholm suburb Tumba, and currently lives in the neighboring town Salem together with his wife. He has a Bachelor’s degree in biology from Karlstad University. He took two Master's level courses at Karlstad, one which was resilience based and introduced him to the SRC and some theories of resilience thinking. This caught his interest and led to him applying to the SERSD programme.
Before returning to school, he worked in a broad range of fields, such as media production, audio engineering, schools, pre-schools, as a study coach, and as a delivery man.
Claes is also a musician, working with genres ranging from acoustic singer-songwriter music to hardcore rock/metal. While his current acoustic music hasn’t been recorded yet, the brave listener can hear him on guitar and background vocals on the 2007 self-titled debut of hardcore band The Spring This Autumn.
