Sara Matthée is a MSc student following the Social-Ecological Resilience for Sustainable Development programme 2024-2026.

Matthee joined the SRC Master’s program in Social-Ecological Resilience for Sustainable Development in 2024. She chose the program for its interdisciplinary approach and to expand her understanding of social-ecological systems and resilience. She likes to focus on the relationships between humans and nature to explore the challenges and opportunities these interactions create.

Before coming to the SRC, Matthee completed an Honours BSc in Global Sustainability Science at the Copernicus Institute of Sustainable Development, Utrecht University. She specialized in "Water, Climate & Ecosystems" and "Governance & Societal Transformation" and was part of the Geoscience Honours College.

To combine her two tracks, Matthee wrote her BSc thesis about the social and ecological steps need to rewild abandoned farmland in Europe using a Theory of Change. Afterwards, to gain practical experience, she did a six-month internship with the drinking water company PWN that manages the dune areas in North Holland including the rewilding area Kraansvlak. During the internship she conducted workshops and surveys to assess the rewilding progress of the National Park Zuid Kennemerland.

Alongside her studies, Matthee worked as a student assistant at the Centre for Sustainable Leadership at Witten/Herdecke University. There, she focused on sustainability from a business perspective.
