Maganizo Kruger Nyasulu is a PhD researcher with particular focus on building green-blue water resilience for sustainable development in Africa

Nyasulu’s work aims at advancing detailed green and blue water mapping in Africa, based on availability, demand and resilience management under different climatic conditions to meet the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). To undertake this research Nyasulu is working with Ingo Fetzer, Malin Falkenmark and Johan Rockström along with the global biosphere and water modelling group at PIK (Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research) and Weiskel Research group at USGS (U.S Geological Survey).

As population in Africa continues to grow, so do the demands placed on water and soil for food production. This poses a major challenge in meeting the SDGs. There is a knowledge gap regarding what and how much water will be used to fulfill this demand now and in the future. Through his research, Nyasulu searches for synergies and trade-offs in strategies to secure water for agriculture in Africa, to build resilience.

Nyasulu has a background in dynamical systems analysis and economics. He holds a Joint MSc. degree with Distinction in Sustainable Development from Uppsala University and Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU). During his Masters’ exchange program, he worked on water-food-energy nexus modeling at Hebrew University of Jerusalem (Israel), and Sustainable Landscape management at Lincoln University (New Zealand). He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from University of Malawi and has previously worked at UNFCCC on Mitigation Data Analysis for the Paris Agreement in Germany. He also worked at One Acre Fund responsible for developing sustainable agricultural projects and is a Global Health Corps Fellowship alumnus.
