Today more than half of the world's population lives in cities. The production and consumption habits of city dwellers have a major impact on biodiversity across the globe, and the accelerating rate of urbanisation also puts more pressure on habitats around the cities. At the same time, through collective efforts and initiatives, cities and regions hold great potential for the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity.
This presentation was made by Programme Officer Oliver Hillel from the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) at the UNESCO side event "Towards a participatory ecosystem approach to urban planning" which took place at the 10th City Biodiversity Summit at COP Nagoya, 2010.
