The SUPER Project: Sustainable Urban Planning for Ecosystem services and Resilience
This two-year project explores how integration of the concept of 'ecosystem services' into urban spatial planning efforts could increase human wellbeing in cities and build resilience in relation to uncertain outcomes of urbanization and climate change.

Johan Colding holds a PhD in natural resource management and is employed as a research coordinator of urban studies at the Beijer Institute of Ecological Economics.
There is an urgent need to develop innovative tools for how to plan, manage and design for ecosystem services in urban areas.

The major objective of the SUPER-project is to develop improved knowledge on how to integrate ecosystem services in urban spatial planning processes.

In collaboration with researchers from the Wageningen University (The Nederland), and the Istanbul Technical University (Turkey), the SUPER-project seeks to identify critical aspects in current modes of spatial planning for sustaining ecosystem services.

Drawing on research, methodologies, and practical insights for dealing with ecosystem services in the three European city-regions of Istanbul, Arnhem-Nijmegen, and Stockholm, researchers exchange knowledge and experiences in a number of research activities, including sustainable integrated design at Stockholm University, resilience building of biomass production in metropolitan landscapes, watershed management in face of climate change, “ green urban commons" and current and historical governance of urban ecosystem services.

The subprojects are framed by a coherent framework of overarching research questions. Results will be of practical use by urban planners, managers and policy makers.

The project is funded by the FORMAS as part of the URBAN-NET project, with an additional 3-year grant received for the period 2010-2012. Since project inception three workshops have been completed and with several publications and ongoing projects, including MSc projects.
