What is Geographical Information Systems (GIS)?Geographical Information Systems (GIS) integrates all forms of geographically referenced information using some specific software to capture, manage and analyze the spatial data as well as associated attribute data.
What is Remote Sensing (RS)?Remote sensing are technologies used to observe and register the environment from some distance. Most common are aerial photos but satellite images are becoming increasingly important. The spatial and temporal resolution varies a lot between different systems but they are very well suited for environmental and vegetation classification due to more spectral bands compared to aerial photos.
What is Global Positioning System (GPS)?Global Positioning System is a global navigation satellite system developed by the US Department of Defence. GPS is often used in combination with a mobile GIS system on handheld computers.
What are Spatial statistics?Spatial statistics is used to analyze for example ecological data to see the distribution and relationships in data sets. The open source software R provides a wide variety of statistical (linear and nonlinear modeling, classical statistical tests, time-series analysis, classification, clustering, etc.) and graphical techniques, and is highly extensible.To facilitate research utilizing these technologies, the following softwares are provided and supported by the lab: IDRISI (ClarkLabs.)
