The Baltic Sea

The valuation of marine and coastal ecosystem services in the Baltic Sea

Regional workshop, 7-8 November, 2013 in Stockholm

The understanding of the value and function of the ecosystem services provided by the Baltic Sea is still limited. For that reason HELCOM, the Swedish Environmental Ministry, UNEP, Stockholm Resilience Centre and the Nordic Council of Ministers will organize a workshop on the economic valuation of marine and coastal ecosystem services in the Baltic Sea.

The purpose of the workshop is to allow experts and policy makers to meet, exchange information and discuss how economic valuation of the Baltic Sea can be used for ecosystem-based marine management.

Topics to be discussed include the ecology and economy of the Baltic Sea, valuation of ecosystem services in the further implementation of the Baltic Sea Action Plan, internalization of environmental costs and examples how it could be applied in solving regional environmental problems in the Baltic Sea area, human impact on the Baltic Sea influencing ecosystem services, ecosystem valuation and policy in a global and regional context, how to make the value of ecosystem services visible, through valuation and integrated decision making, and UNEP and TEEB global perspective on economic valuation of coastal and marine ecosystem services.

Experiences at various levels including global, European, regional and national will be exchanged and results from accomplished studies will be shared. The applicability of the TEEB and other relevant approaches for the management of the Baltic marine ecosystem will be discussed in the context of the EU Marine Strategy Framework Directive as well as the Baltic Sea Action Plan.

Participants include scientists, representatives from international organisations and personnel from government offices and agencies.
