Mapping the politics of ecology (MAPLE). The impact of democracy, institutions, and social capital on environmental capacity
WHAT IS THE CHALLENGE?What determines the capacity of states to govern their natural environments? The MAPLE (MApping the PoLitics of Ecology) project seeks to enhance our scientific knowledge about factors underlying successes and failures of nation states in addressing environmental problems. Specifically, the project focuses on studying the role of trust and corruption in determining the capacity of states to combat environmental degradation and manage natural resources.HOW CAN THE PROJECT CONTRIBUTE TO A SOLUTION?
Through a comparative focus, The MAPLE project sheds new light on issues relating to how basic socio-political structures of society might facilitate or obstruct the enactment of environmental policies. As such, the project will provide valuable basic science about precondition for political solutions to environmental problems.
WHO WILL BENEFIT FROM THE RESULTS?
Outputs from the MAPLE project might, for instance, be used for predicting the feasibility of global climate change adaptation policies and agreements, or for deciding how to allocate environmental aid projects.
