Compound-specific isotope analysis (CSIA): A sharp novel tool for source assignment of toxic organic substances in the environment
WHAT IS THE CHALLENGE?There is frequently poor knowledge of the sources of xenobiotic compounds in the environment that has negative consequences for organisms or is affecting the climate. HOW CAN THE PROJECT CONTRIBUTE TO A SOLUTION?
The objective of the project is to develop and establish a new and effective analytical methodology to constrain these compounds’ isotopic composition. This compound-specific isotope composition is a property that can be thought of as a unique “fingerprint” that reveals the dominant source of the compound. This information facilitates efforts to limit its formation and environmental release.
WHO WILL BENEFIT FROM THE RESULTS?
Problem owners such as governmental bodies and industry, with limited financial resources need to prioritize which of many sources to target for most effective mitigation of the releases will benefit from the sharp decision support information that compound-specific isotope composition represents.
