Clean development and demonstration - sustainable domestic washing- s´wash

Project period:
2008 - 2011

Funding:
6 MSEK

Project leader:
Peringe Grennfelt
IVL Svenska Miljöinstitutet AB

Articles about the project:

WHAT IS THE CHALLENGE?
Water resources are limited in many areas with fast development. When living standards are increasing, the use of water increases rapidly, due to water flushed toilets, personal hygiene and washing of textiles. The development of new techniques to minimise the use of primary water resources will urgently be needed. This project focuses on one of the areas - washing!
The risk for overdosing has also increased due to the introduction of compact detergent that uses approximately half the amount compared to non-compact detergent. This gives that when someone puts a little extra in the detergent dispenser the overdosing will have a larger impact than ten years ago.

HOW CAN THE PROJECT CONTRIBUTE TO A SOLUTION?
The project will through introducing different techniques optimize the use of both water- and energy consumption with focus on household machines. Reuse of water and introducing monitoring of the process through for example sensor technique will be investigated. A special detergent will be formulated to be able to lower the temperature but still keep the cleanliness at a hygienic level. The main objective is to physically create and demonstrate a domestic washing system that uses significant less resource (environmental and running costs) than present systems. The aim is to run a prototype with 70% less freshwater use and 60% reduction of energy.

WHO WILL BENEFIT FROM THE RESULTS?
Washing machine - and detergent manufactures, the consumers and last but not least - the environment!
