The new Mistra Innovation programme will enable small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to develop innovative ideas for commercialisable and environmentally sound products and processes.

The call for applications for the Mistra Innovation research programme came to an end on 17 October. By then Mistra, the Swedish Foundation for Strategic Environmental Research, had received 43 applications. Of these the two councils, scientific and industrial, selected 12 applications for in-depth reviews and hearings.

‘Competition has been extremely stiff, and six out of 43 applications have received funding. All six have great potential and will reduce burdens on the environment appreciably when their project targets are met,’ says Lars Frenning, Mistra Innovation Programme Manager.

‘The successful applications cover a broad range, from Regulated intelligent light with feedback to Recycling and construction of fibre-reinforced plastic,’ relates Christopher Folkeson Welch, Programme Director at Mistra. ‘Several of the projects are highly generic and can be used in considerably more areas than those addressed by the specific projects themselves.’

Mistra Innovation addresses not only the engineering industry but all technological SMEs operating in Sweden, for example in the food, energy and recycling industries. The objective of the programme is to implement the results of research in Swedish industry. In this way, Mistra Innovation can contribute to Sweden’s future growth and help to improve the environment.

This is the first of two rounds of calls for applications in Mistra Innovation. A second is expected to start in early 2013.
