The environmental research areas to be scrutinised by MCEE will be selected by an international Executive Committee whose members have now been appointed by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. They are:
  • Jacqueline McGlade of the European Environment Agency (EEA), Copenhagen, Denmark
  • Kjell Asplund, formerly of the Swedish Council on Health Technology Assessment (SBU), Stockholm, Sweden
  • Andrew Pullin of the Centre for Evidence-Based Conservation, Bangor University, UK
  • Katherine Richardson of the University of Copenhagen, Copenhagen, Denmark
  • Jerry M. Melillo of the MBL (Marine Biological Laboratory) Ecosystems Center, USA
  • Henrik Smith of Lund University, Lund, Sweden
  • Jacob Fant, an experienced brand strategist and CEO of Rewir, the Swedish branding agency
  • Thomas Rosswall, former Executive Director of the International Council for Science (ICSU) and former Vice-Chancellor of the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU), now Chair of the Executive Committee.

‘The MCEE initiative, which involves summarising the state of scientific knowledge in relation to key environmental issues, is an exciting and important challenge,´ says Thomas Rosswall

‘The Council brings together some of the absolutely most eminent figures in international scientific environmental research, and this will guarantee that its evidence-based evaluations are of top scientific quality,´ he continues.

The Council will be headed by Sif Johansson as its newly appointed Director. With the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency as a base, she has worked in environmental research on both a national and an international front, mainly in marine ecology. Ms Johansson will take up her post on 1 December 2011.

‘I´m looking forward to developing the work of evaluating environmental research,´ says Sif Johansson. ‘My hope is that MCEE will be a link between research and decision-making, and help to strengthen future decisions in the environmental sector.´

In March 2011, Mistra and the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences decided to set up an independent council to evaluate environmental research, in order to improve documentation for decisions about environmental policy. More information about MCEE is available at www.mistra.org and www.kva.se.
