Operational strategy

Mistra’s purpose, activities, etc. are described in its statutes (1993). For the period 2009-2014, Mistra’s Board of Directors has decided that the operations shall be as follows:

MISTRA’S APPROACH IS TO:
  • Be a leader in the Swedish system supporting research and innovation.
  • Independently develop, implement and evaluate ideas and activities for highest quality.
  • Invest in research and development of environmentally-strategic value for mankind and society, when possible in collaboration with other Swedish or international funding organizations.
  • Only grant financing through competitive tendering processes.
  • Evaluate proposals with respect to both scientific quality and societal value.
  • Implement research programmes together with academia, the private sector, public administrative agencies and NGOs.
  • Develop sustainable asset management in a global economy.
  • Review its priorities annually and revise its strategy every sixth year.
  • Within the current six-year period, invest up to 1.2 billion Swedish Crowns in environmentally-strategic research.

POINTS OF DEPARTURE FOR MISTRA’S ACTIVITIES

  • The world currently faces huge changes. Mistra shall play an active role in initiating and supporting research and education that contributes to sustainable development for society and the private sector.
  • Research initiated by Mistra shall contribute to more effective energy use and transportation, pollution-free and efficient resource use, sustainable production and consumption, and conservation with regard to land, water and the built environment.

To be a leading initiator of barrier breaking research that prevents and solves significant environmental problems.

MISTRA’S MISSION
To invest in interdisciplinary research of the highest quality, that, in collaboration with end-users, contributes to preventing and solving significant environmental problems.

MISTRA’S STRATEGIC GOALS FOR 2009-2014

Research goal:

Mistra supports first-class research that makes a difference for society and the private sector.

This is achieved by Mistra:

  • Mapping societal and the private sector needs, in order to initiate and support important environmentally-strategic research.
  • Developing strong interdisciplinary research groups by providing support for programmes that cut across disciplines over a number of years.
  • Promoting international research exchange for the purpose of strengthening Swedish strategic environmental research.
  • Following up and evaluating its efforts.

Communication goal:

Mistra’s communications ensures that research results are put to use.

This is achieved by Mistra:

  • Involving stakeholders from society and the private sector in the entire research cycle, from the idea stage and onward.
  • Communicating ideas, pilot studies, research results and sustainable asset management.
  • Supporting research programmes that in turn communicate with the private sector and policymakers.
  • Developing new forms of communication and networks for increased exchange of ideas and results between research, the private sector, public administration and NGOs.

Asset management goal:

Mistra’s asset management provides a role model for how investments can influence development in society and the private sector toward long-term sustainability.

This is achieved by Mistra:

  • Operating its asset management profitably.
  • Developing sustainable management through research and continuous exchange with development and research projects in the area of sustainable asset management.
