THE PROBLEM

How to obtain the necessary, reliable information on the state of the environment so that the real problems and their causes can be attacked? How to know whether investments made to manage environmental problems are actually having the desired effect? How to make environmental protection as cost-effective as possible? To have safe and constant access to relevant and correct data about the environment, at the least possible cost, is of decisive significance for good environmental research and environmental monitoring. This is also a must to be able to take correct and effective decisions in environmental issues.

HOW CAN THE PROGRAMME CONTRIBUTE TO A SOLUTION TO THE PROBLEM?

Researchers within RESE are trying to ensure that information from satellites will soon be put to practical everyday use in environmental monitoring and assessment. Remote sensing with the help of satellites is a cost-effective way of collecting environmental data on phenomena that can vary considerably both in time and space. It can provide valuable guidance on how the environment is affected and is under heavy pressure from agriculture and forestry, road building, urban sprawl or acidification, as well as tourism and recreation. Even when it comes to discussions on the environmental impact of climate change and global warming, satellite data represents an important source of information. A great deal of the information can be made available to authorities, companies, environmental organisations and the general public. Applications are currently being developed in cooperation with companies and authorities.

WHO WILL BENEFIT FROM THE RESULTS?

Forestry. Agriculture. Reindeer herding. Fishery. The transport sector. Central, regional and local authorities responsible for these activities. Tourism. Environmental authorities. Municipalities in the mountain region and by the coast.
