THE PROBLEM

Buildings and other constructions are long-term components of our environment. It may seem that they just stand there for decades, perhaps centuries, but they affect us and the environment throughout their entire lives. A number of flows - material, energy, water, sewage, waste, smoke - enter and exit buildings. Building has palpable environmental impact, both in the short term when new buildings are being erected or old ones refurbished, and long-term for the whole time the building is in use, but our building practices are still far from sustainable. Sustainable building is where the construction, maintenance and utilisation of all buildings are carried out using material and technology that consume the least possible amounts of non-renewable resources, facilitate good management and recovery, prevent emissions of harmful substances to soil, water and air, as well as result in a minimum of non-renewable residual products.

HOW CAN THE PROGRAMME CONTRIBUTE TO A SOLUTION TO THE PROBLEM?

The programme focuses on all the stages of a building's life - from the drawing board, through the production of materials, planning, construction, use, management (maintenance, refurbishment and modification), to dismantling, demolition and recovery or deposition. The aim is to help building and real-estate managers promote considerably better utilisation of material and energy and substantially restrict emissions of harmful substances and waste amounts.

WHO WILL BENEFIT FROM THE RESULTS?

The construction industry. Housing companies. Real estate companies. Central, regional and local authorities responsible for building and infrastructure issues. The recovery industry. Consumers (residents).
