This course explores alternative approaches for analyzing how people make choices, use rules, and learn to manage and govern social-ecological systems
The course will introduce multiple perspectives on management and governance that include approaches to decision-making under uncertainty, approaches to ecological management that enable learning, how institutional choices shape environmental management and how governance can be designed to adapt to social-ecological change.
Students will learn how to apply cost-benefit analysis, decision analysis under uncertainty, and game theory to the analysis of environmental issues. They will explore successful cases of environmental management, and how governance systems have been successfully transformed as well as how mismatches between governance and ecological dynamics can produce failure.
Strategies for effecting positive change in environmental management, and barriers impeding such change will be examined. Students will be introduced to theoretical concepts and methods for analysis, and will conduct group and individual research projects that utilize these concepts and methods.
The course can be studied independently, but requires a Bacherlor degree and knowledge equivalent to "Social-ecological systems: challenges and approaches" (15 credits) and "Systems theory and resilience thinking" (15 credits).

VII: Challenges of Environmental Decision Making (4 ECTS)
VIII: Drama of Commons (3 ECTS)
IX: Adaptive Management (4 ECTS)
X: Adaptive Governance (4 ECTS)
