Sara holds a PhD in natural resource management and systems ecology. Her main research interest is in landscape governance exploring how the social and ecological compartments of landscapes interacts. A core research objective is to investigate how current formal structures and mechanisms of landscape governance can be adapted and transformed to support resilience building. The process of implementing the concept of ecosystem services into practical decision making processes is also a strong interest.
She has a long term commitment to both enhance the understanding of as well as contributing to urban sustainable development processes. Her work in the Stockholm-Mälardalen region started during the PhD thesis work, continued through the postdoc within Ekoklim program and is now extended into the projects ARTs and COMPLEX. During her work within the Ekoklim program hosted by Stockholm University she addressed regional level governance challenges from two angles i) by a case study assessing the adaptive capacity of the multi-level governance of Lake Mälaren and ii) by developing a high resolution, systematic analytical tool for assessing progress in ecosystem based management. Furthermore she performed a large scale interview study regarding the perceptions of the concept of ecosystem services among officials at local, regional and national level in Sweden.

Accelerating and Rescaling Transitions to Sustainability aims to understand the mechanisms of how transition initiatives for urban sustainability can be accelerated and scaled up.
