Thomas Elmqvist is a professor in Natural resource management at Stockholm University. His research is focused on ecosystem dynamics, land use change, natural disturbances and components of resilience including the role of social institutions.
He is coordinating two major interdiciplinary research projects as part of the new Stockholm Resilience Centre, Stockholm University. The first focuses on governance and management in urban landscapes, the other on systems dynamics in land- and seascapes.
As a major contribution to the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment, he coordinated an urban research project in metropolitan Stockholm.
He is also principal investigator of multidisciplinary projects in Madagascar and in the South Pacific.
He is currently chair of the Man and Biosphere International Coordinating Council (UNESCO) and served as chair of the Council of Tropical Biology Association 2002 — 2006.
