Lisa´s research examines the couplings between the ecological effects of globalization of food production systems and national policy and economic accounts. She earned her PhD in Natural Resource Management at the Department of Systems Ecology in October 2004.

Lisa's thesis, entitled “Global trade, food production and ecosystem support" examined some of the ways in which global trade changed the mix of inputs to food and feed by estimating the ecosystem subsidies needed to support Swedish food consumption and aquaculture production in Thailand and Norway.

Her work contributes to the development of a set of complementary tools that can be used in economic accounting at national and international scales that address ecosystem support and performance.

Presently, she is part of the UN sponsored LEAD-SCOPE project ‘Livestock in a Changing Landscape´ where she coordinates the investigation team researching the implications for freshwater and coastal ecosystem functioning relative to intensive livestock production systems.

She has collaborative links with a number of universities including Chiang Mai University, Thailand (Louis Lebel), Stanford University, USA (Rosamund Naylor), Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (Rebecka Milestad, Johanna Björklund) and other departments within Stockholm University: Economic History (Ulf Jonsson) and Cultural Geography (Mats Widgren) as well as active cooperation with the international research groups at the Stockholm Environmental Institute (Johan Rockström), CGIAR-International Livestock Research Institute (Don Peden) and the the Beijer International Institute of Ecological Economics (Max Troell).

Lisa has presented at several international conferences and was granted a Young Scientist Scholarship by the IHDP in 2001. Her publications are in Ecosystems, Ecological Economics, Conservation Ecology, and Global Environmental Change.

Dr. Deutsch´s research has generated great recent interest in Sweden, and she has responded as an active participant in public and political discussions. She has presented her research as a featured speaker at: the Ministry of Agriculture, Swedish Environmental Protection Agency, and Swedish Environmental Management Council, as well as writing for the Academy of Agriculture and Forestry (KSLA).

Further, she is an elected representative of Organic Standards Committee of the national certification board KRAV.

Lisa also runs the centre's Master´s level programme Sustainable Enterprising. This is a unique transdisciplinary education that includes practical work in organizations in both the private and public sector.
