The Department of Physical Geography and Quaternary Geology is one of the major departments within the Faculty of Science at Stockholm University. The department has 120 employees and approximately 1500 students.

The main research disciplines are Geomorphology, Glaciology, Climatology, Quaternary Geology, Hydrology, Remote Sensing, Geographical Data Processing, Ecological Geography and Tropical Geography. Teaching is oriented towards geography, earth sciences, integrated biology-earth science and environmental protection.

Project description
We seek to recruit a candidate for a PhD position in a trans-disciplinary project that will model the dynamics of multiple ecosystem services in human dominated landscapes.

Successful applicants will join an exciting interdisciplinary team working on a broad range of issues in ecology and the environment. The candidate will develop a conceptual framework and a set of simulation models to explore potential trade-offs and synergisms that exist between ecosystem services, and that can be used to identify potential traps and opportunities for the management of these landscapes.

This work will be strongly linked to ongoing work assessing ecosystem services in diverse agricultural landscapes in Canada, Sweden, and South Africa as well as collaboration researchers at Stockholm University in Physical Geography and Stockholm Resilience Centre.

Terms of employment
The 4-year PhD project includes at least 3 years of research and at most one year of course work. The position may be extended by up to one year, if up to 20% teaching assistance or administration is included in the contract.

Qualifications
The candidate should have an MSc or equal in Biology-Earth science, Physical geography or equivalent field. The successful candidate should be enthusiastic about conducting trans-disciplinary studies. A background in ecology and simulation modeling is an advantage along with prevoius experience working with ecosystem services, agro-ecology, resilience, and quantitative analysis. The PhD thesis will be written in English.

Envisioned starting date is June 1, 2009, although Sept 1 2009 would also be possible.
